Missouri's official residence for it's First Family stands on the site of the first building that was used as the governor's residence when the seat of government was moved to Jefferson City in 1826. The original Capitol building erected on this lot housed executive offices, legislative chambers and an apartment for the governor. Since that time, two new Capitols and two different governor's residences have been built. The current Governor's Mansion cost nearly $75,000 when it was built and furnished in 1871. The interior is restored to the 1871 period and includes a magnificent winding stairway, marble fireplaces, elaborate ceilings, and handsome Renaissance Revival furnishings.
